Obituary of Daniel Hilton Fretwell

Mr. Daniel Hilton Fretwell, of Daingerfield passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the age of 93. Dan was born September 16, 1924 Camp County, Texas to James Martin Fretwell and Julia Daniel Fretwell.

Dan left school in 10th grade to join the Navy in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the Pacific theater and was stationed in Hawaii for the duration of his service. After the end of WWII he returned to Texas where he received his High School Diploma. Afterwards he attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville where he would receive a Masters Degree. Dan went to work at Lone Star Steel where he spent over 30 years as a metallurgical chemist before retiring.

On December 24, 1947 he wed Hilda Ruth Potter, a former schoolmate of his, and the love of his life. Dan was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. As a young man he was an adept bird hunter and kept several hunting dogs. Deer hunting, however, was his great passion, and a hobby he pursued for many years. He was a member of the Daingerfield Church of Christ.

Dan was devoted to his family, and was very close with his nieces and nephews. He was thought of as a grandfather by many of his great-nieces and great-nephews. Dan delighted in the time he was able to spend enjoying family fellowship.

Mr. Fretwell is survived by his son, Randy Quay Fretwell and his wife Virginia Lewis Fretwell of Hughes Springs; grandchild, Emma White-Fretwell; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Hilda Ruth Fretwell; siblings: Letha Duke, Wymouth Jones, Rosa Belle Helms, Hulon Fretwell, Lewis Fretwell, and Kathryn Walton.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsburg, Texas with burial to follow at the Fretwell Family Cemetery in Camp County, Texas. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
