Obituary of James Darryl Monts

James Darryl "Jimmy" Monts, age 75, of Pittsburg, passed away Thursday evening, January 18, 2018 in Tyler, surrounded by his family. Jimmy was born March 2, 1942 in Gilmer, Texas to Hubert and Allyne Monts. On March 2, 1964 Jimmy was drafted into the US Army for service in the Vietnam War. Jimmy saw combat in Vietnam with the 16th Infantry Regiment and was wounded in action in January 1966, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After his discharge in February of 1966 he returned to the Pittsburg area and worked for over 42 years as a brick mason.

Jimmy loved his family, especially his two grandchildren. He was an avid golf player while his health permitted. He was a huge fan of his grandchildren's athletic events and often traveled to see Mason play baseball, and never missed a football game at which Megan was cheering at.

Jimmy was a devout Christian and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pittsburg.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda Rountree Monts; a son: Randy Monts and wife Allison of Pittsburg; one granddaughter: Megan Monts of Tyler; a grandson: Mason Monts of Pittsburg; a sister: Dianne Monts Davis and husband Kenneth of Pittsburg; he is also survived by his two sisters-in-law: Colleene Rountree of Andrews, Texas, and GiGi Rountree of Tyler; two brothers-in-law: Rex Rountree of Houston, and Raymond Ryan of Pittsburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Hubert and Allyne Monts; two brothers: Travis Monts and Kenneth Monts; a sister: Elaine Monts Laney; and a great-nephew: Jarred Hicks Hooper.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pittsburg with Bro. Kyle Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Upshur County. Visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 20, prior to the service.
