Obituary of Saul Martinez

Saul Martinez, of Pittsburg, passed away suddenly Sunday morning, September 24 at the age of 24. Saul was born November 9, 1992 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas to Lucio and Alicia Navarette Martinez.

Saul was a 2011 graduate of Pittsburg High School. An athlete as well as a scholar, Saul was nominated to the first team all-state selection as a senior, was a three-time all-district honoree, and was selected for first team All-East Texas. Under the direction of Coach Robert Manley, Saul would begin to hone his skills as a kicker which would lead to his receiving multiple football scholarships. In addition to his football accomplishments he also lettered four times each in both soccer and baseball.

Saul received a football scholarship to Trinity Valley Community College, there he received an associates degree in business. While playing football at TVCC, Saul made the second team all-conference selection in his Freshman (2011) and Sophmore (2012) years. 

After receiving another football scholarship, this time to Texas A&M Commerce, Saul transferred there for his Junior and Senior years to persue his Bachelors degree in Business. In his Junior (2013) year Saul received the All Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention and set an A&M-Commerce record with 17 kicking points (3 FG, 8 PAT) in win over McMurry (10-19-13). In his Senior year (2014) he received numerous commendations including: D2Football.com All-America Team honorable mention, Don Hansen All-America Honors, and Dan Hansen All-Region Team First Team Honors. In addition to that Saul helped the Texas A&M Commerce Lions to a Lone Star Conference Championship by setting a school record for kicking points in a season. Saul ranks 5th in school history in scoring with 219 career points.

In 2014 Saul accepted a position at Cypress Bank in Pittsburg as a loan officer, although he held down many other duties there as well.

On January 9, 2014 Saul wed Abby Brummell. Saul was a devoted husband, and the couple are expecting a daughter, Luci Joyce Martinez in March.

Saul is survived by his wife Abby Martinez, and unborn daughter Luci Joyce Martinez. Also left to cherish his memory are his parents: Lucio and Alicia Martinez; two brothers: Oscar Alejandro Martinez and Moses Martinez and wife Breeanna; three uncles: Hector Martinez, Francisco Martinez, and Delfino Martinez; five aunts: Maria Garcia, Maria Martinez, Teresa Garcia, Aurora Martinez, and Claudia Martinez; his grandmother: Dionicia Hernandez; his father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Kim Brummell, brother-in-law John Marc Brummell, three aunts-in-law: Rhonda French, Amy Gains, and Denise Reynolds, two uncles-in-law: Robert Brummell and Geary Brummell; and a grandmother-in-law: Verna Hawkins.

Saul was preceded in death by his grandfather Delfino Martinez, grandmother Estulia Euvaldo, grandfather-in-laws Beau Brummell and Carol Hawkins, and grandmother-in-law Joyce Brummell.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Pittsburg. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Erman Smith Funeral Home. The visitation at the funeral home will be followed by an overnight visitation at the Holy Cross Catholic Church Family Center located at 413 Hill Avenue in Pittsburg.
