Melinda, I am saddened by the loss of your mother but have great memories of her. As a librarian and teacher she was loved by her students. She inspired a love of reading and always recognized the potential in each of them. She also passed that gift along to you as my daughters tell me you were one of their favorites too. In later years Shirley and I took painting classes together and it was such a joy to sit across the table from her and reminisce. She was gifted in so many ways! I pray that you will find comfort as you go through this difficult journey.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Mrs. Hamm was my librarian for grades 3rd-5th. She made a deep impression on me and helped me further develop my love of reading. The library was one of my favorite places with some of my fondest memories. Even after leaving school she has been in my thoughts. There are two scriptures, from my favorite book, the Bible that brings me comfort when I have lost a loved one. They are Acts 24:15 which states, "There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” And Psalm 37:29 which states, "The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it." These scriptures have brought me comfort, as I hope they also do for friends and family of Mrs. Hamm.

Melinda and family, Craig and I are saddened for you by your loss of your mom. I got to know Shirley when she would sub for me back when I was teaching Gifted and Talented students at PJH. She and Mrs. Kennington were my favorite subs because not only would they do the plans I left but they would make the kids mind! Shirley would say that she understood them because everyone in her family was gifted and talented starting with her daughter and son-in-law down to her grandkids. She,herself, was a gifted teacher! Our profession was better because of her!

We are so sorry to hear about your mom, one of my favorite teachers. Her obituary was very fitting for a great woman who left her mark in Pittsburg and on her students. How lucky were her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids to have benefited from her knowledge.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mrs. Hamm was able to inspire kids to forget about the crumbling building around them and stop shooting spitballs {Not me!} at the portrait of George Washington on the the wall of the old PHS, and find something on the shelf that interested you. Just you. When she found out what made you look twice at something she would hand you a book. "This might work for you." She was strict and kind and she opened a world to me. Everybody has a story to tell. This woman knew how to keep 8th graders in line and made them act like young adults. She expected no less from anyone. Lesson learned. Godspeed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all today. I have the utmost respect for Shirley. Our morning 'debates' before school started were the highlight of my day. We always ended up agreeing to disagree. She would invent wonderful library activities for my class to enjoy. She had an intrinsic ability to understand children who struggled everyday for acceptance. Shirley treated every child equally. She was an inclusion expert way before it became the norm. I enjoyed her dry wit, and infectious grin.
I know I never expressed my gratitude strongly enough so Shirley one more resounding thank you for all you have done for children. Safe journey home.

I think I truly learned most of what I know in 7th grade language arts with Mrs. Hamm! She was just that good! I'll never forget the vocabulary she taught before our class viewed JFK's funeral at school. When would an East Texas girl learn words like cortege, caisson? I used her memory devices for words like desert/dessert, and stationary/stationery in my own English classes. She just leaves a legacy of the love of language to many of us. There will never be a group of wonderful teachers like we had in Pittsburg, and Mrs. Hamm is at the top!
My sincerest sympathy to all of you,
Bette Bullard Wooten

Shirley did such a good work encouraging all to aspire to his or her own greatness. I know God was smiling as He welcomed her into heaven. May He wrap His arms around your family now and during those moments you will miss her so much. What a blessing to have had graceful mothers and grandmothers. My prayers are with you all.
