I only had two cousins in my youth, and in those days I knew this one as Tommy - blonde, quick grin, mischievous (I must mention that even in the posted photo I still see that twinkle in his eye - don't you?), always a big presence in the room. He was only five years older than me so in a lot of ways he was more brotherly than cousin; his antics often amusing to this particular young cousin. Family is often a complicated dynamic and God knows ours had more than its share but I was always happy to be in his presence. When he was 21, (now preferring the [clearing throat...] more mature nickname "Tom") he was recruited by the parentals (both of mine conspiring with his mom) to come talk sense into defiant, 16-year-old-me. So he showed up unannounced one day and hung out with me a day or two. He was privately honest up front about his subversive mission, and that he had no intention of advising me, but simply played out the possibilities for me, from personal experience. I've always been thankful that his allegiance was to me in that situation, and that he offered full support, helping without intruding. During the years after we each married and were immersed in child raising, etc. we communicated very little (life gets in the way if we let it, right?) but I thought of him often. I reached out to him and was thankful that we reconnected after my father's death; we remained in contact during the ensuing years. He clearly adored his wife and Chuck; all remarks about them were loving and filled with fondness - I'm grateful for the happiness and contentment they brought into his life, and thankful he retired (some would say too) early so he had those relaxing years of fishing and just enjoying his life. We could all learn from his example! What a void he leaves behind, like the echo of his charming laughter. He will be deeply and profoundly missed by me; I loved him, too. I am so deeply sorry he left us (too soon) and hope you take comfort knowing (he never hesitated to remark how) you made him a happy, happy man; he loved you so much.

My deepest condolences on your loss. It is very difficult when we lose a loved one in death. I have always been comforted by God's promise in the Bible that we will see our loved ones again. When Jesus' friend Lazarus died, he said at John 11:11,13,14, "“[Jesus] added: ‘Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I am traveling there to awaken him.’ Jesus, however, had spoken about his death. But they imagined he was speaking about taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly: ‘Lazarus has died.’” Here we see that our loved ones are resting. John 5:28,29 states, "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Also, Acts 24:15 states,"There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” These scriptures give me much comfort and hope. I hope that they have also helped you in this difficult time.

I was shocked when I heard that Tom had passed. I worked with Tom at the DFW Airport Train and Skylink systems. He was a great guy. I am praying for your family during this difficult time.
