Obituary of Nelda Ruth Drennan Thompson

Nelda R. Thompson Nelda Ruth Drennan Thompson, 91, of Pittsburg went home to be with her Lord on March 30, 2016. She was residing at Christian Care Center, Mesquite, Texas at the time of her passing. Mrs. Thompson was born in Newsome, Texas on August 11, 1924 to Albert Grady Drennan and Ruth Amanda (Knight) Drennan. She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Reggie) Scheu of Garland, Texas; her son, Lynn (Liane) Thompson of Bluffton, Ohio. She is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses. Jonathan (Cecilia) Scheu of Ft. Worth, Texas; Allison Scheu of Waco, Texas; Timothy (Jean) Thompson of Louisville, Kentucky; Amanda (Brandon) Salsbury of Lawton, Michigan; Juliane (Jon) Marshall of Louisville, Kentucky; and Emily Thompson of Louisville, Kentucky; four great grand children: Cora & Kai Thompson, Coulter Salsbury, and Elle Marshall along with a host of other beloved relatives and friends. After graduation from Winnsboro High School in 1943, Nelda Ruth Drennan married David Coulter Thompson on June 26th of that year in New Orleans, Louisiana. She then worked for the Western Union during the war. Her husband, Dave, left school to serve in the Army during WW2 and she became instrumental in sending him textbooks and assignments in order for him to obtain his diploma. Dave and Nelda faithfully supported each other in many endeavors during their 66 years of marriage. Mrs.Thompson was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished the time spent with her family. The yearly Thanksgiving trips to Kentucky to spend with family was of great importance to her. She and Dave were members of two supper clubs that met monthly for many years. Wonderful, long- lasting friendships were made with couples in these groups. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She involved herself in volunteer opportunities with the PTA, First United Methodist Church, Maple Springs Cemetery, Newsome Community Center, and Twentieth Century Study Club. She enjoyed the time she spent working as a staff writer for the Pittsburg Gazette. She was an excellent cook, loved flower gardening and sharing what she grew,  and enjoyed preparing and providing food for her family and others. Mrs. Thompson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg for 59 years. She loved FUMC Pittsburg and the people in it. She was a member of the Builders Sunday School class and UMW. She and her husband Dave were sponsors of the Methodist Youth Fellowship for nine years and so much enjoyed that time of service. Visitation with family will be Saturday, April 9th from 5:00 -7:00 PM at Erman Smith Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Memorial services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Texas on Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 PM with burial to follow at Maple Springs Cemetery near Newsome,Texas. Pallbearers will be Reggie Scheu, Timothy Thompson and Jonathan Scheu (grandsons), Brandon Salsbury and Jon Marshall (grandsons-in-law), and John Malone (cousin).
